Familylinks Urges Support for Those in Recovery During COVID-19
Family and friends asked to reach out to individuals in recovery to combat isolation and stress
Pittsburgh, PA, September 24, 2020 … Familylinks is urging individuals to check in with those in your life who are in recovery from substance use. Because of the isolation, stress and treatment barriers that are prevalent during COVID-19 restrictions, it is more critical than ever to check in on family, friends and neighbors. As a leader in substance use treatment and recovery programs in the Pittsburgh region, Familylinks has used social media and community outreach during National Recovery Month in September to emphasize the difficulties encountered by those in recovery throughout the social distancing, employment and other challenges resulting from the pandemic.
Stacey Vaccaro, president and CEO of Familylinks, commented, “As an essential organization, Familylinks has worked proactively since COVID-19 restrictions were implemented to maintain support services for our consumers. Our residential facilities for individuals in recovery have fully maintained operations, and our staff works diligently to use today’s technology to assist our outpatient consumers in maintaining their recovery. Many government and private studies have reported an increase in substance use during COVID-19 because of prolonged isolation, health concerns and anxiety. We will continue to extend our message of hope and encouragement beyond National Recovery Month, and ask everyone to join us in this effort.”
The American College of Physicians published a study, The Epidemic in the Midst of a Pandemic, to identify COVID-related obstacles for those in recovery (April, 2020). In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in August, 2020, that 40% of adults in the U.S. reported an increase in substance use or mental health issues in late June.
Familylinks has been providing support programs and services to individuals in recovery and their families for decades. In addition to tele-services, the agency operates two locations for outpatient services – in Shadyside and on Banksville Road – offering a comprehensive range of treatment options including individual, group, couples, and family counseling. The agency’s inpatient recovery program is a secure residential facility for women, including pregnant women, where they can bring up to two children with them to maintain the family unit.
